Shipmates,

On March 10, 2001, the USS Waddell DDG-24 Association was formed. By-laws were established, a Board of Directors was created and Officers were elected to conduct the normal business of the Association.  By our first anniversary, we exceeded 100 members and shortly after our second anniversary, we issues membership # 200.

The purpose of the Association, as stated in the by-laws, is to maintain and promote a strong cohesive organization comprised of shipmates who served aboard the USS Waddell DDG-24. The goal of the Association is to foster the spirit of goodwill among its members and to afford opportunities for communication, enjoyment, companionship, recreation and involvement. To perpetuate the comrade ship developed among men who served in the United States Navy and to preserve the Waddell’s prominent place in history as a predominant Warship in the service of the United States of America.

During the 2003 Membership Meeting, our membership voted to change the membership fee to $24.00 and to discontinue prorating starting with our 2004 renewal drive.  All future membership and renewal fees will be a flat $24.00.  Renewal will consist of a mailing to all members containing a request to renew and a membership card.  If the member fails to renew, the membership card will be considered void.

Membership funds will be used to offset the costs associated with forming the Association, conduct the normal business of the Association and help finance the short and long, term goals of the Association. In the near future, the Association will establish a Waddell Ship’s Store and create a Waddell News Letter.

There were 29 Adams Class DDGs built during the late 1950s and early 1960s. There were 23 were built for the United States Navy, three for the German Navy and three for the Royal Australian Navy. Those ships are disappearing far to quickly. It is imperative the USS Waddell DDG-24 Association, along with other Adams Class Associations, work as one unit to save and restore at least one of these Warships. The USS Waddell DDG-24 Association will support the effort now underway to save and restore the Charles F. Adams DDG-2.
